From partner files to posted documents in Dynamics 365 F&O, without re-keying

Plenty of partners still send files, not API calls. Here's how to turn order and journal files into posted Finance & Operations documents, and recover the ones that fail without anyone re-typing them.

Files are not going away

Distributors, 3PLs, banks and smaller trading partners still exchange CSV, XML and fixed-width files over SFTP and cloud storage, and many of them always will. In Finance & Operations those files usually end up in front of a person, or in a one-off import job that a developer built for one partner and nobody wants to touch, and every new partner starts the same project again.

The failure mode is re-keying

The expensive part of a file integration is not the happy path. It is the record that fails: a customer that does not exist yet, a price outside tolerance, a closed period. In most setups the whole file is rejected or the failed lines vanish into a log, and someone re-enters them by hand from an email attachment. That is slow, error-prone, and invisible to anyone measuring the integration.

Treat a file as a stream of service calls

A better pattern pulls each file from where the partner drops it, skips files it has already processed, keeps the original as an attachment for audit, splits it into records, and reshapes each record with a template into the same request an API caller would send. Every record then goes through the same validated, exactly-once posting service as any other integration, and its outcome is tracked on its own.

Recover the record, not the file

When one record fails, it should land in a queue where an operator can see why, correct the payload and resubmit it, or hold it until the upstream problem is fixed, while the rest of the file posts normally. That is how file ingestion in Lattice works: SFTP, Azure Blob storage or Azure Files in; CSV, JSON, XML or fixed-width records through a Liquid template; posted documents out; and a dead-letter console for the exceptions, so nobody re-keys anything.
